Born in Seoul in 1960, Hong Sangsoo studied at Chung-Ang University, California College of the Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago. He debuted in 1996 with The Day a Pig Fell into the Well. His film Woman is the Future of Man (2004) premiered in Cannes’ main competition. Hong’s films have also featured in Berlin, Venice, Locarno, and Toronto. He won the Prix Un Certain Regard for Hahaha (2010) at Cannes. At Locarno, he earned the Silver Leopard for Our Sunhi (2013) and the Golden Leopard for Right Now, Wrong Then (2015). He won the Silver Bear for The Woman Who Ran (2020) The Novelist’s Film (2022) as well as for his 31st feature, A Traveller’s Needs. In Our Day (2023) won the El Gouna Gold Star.
