Bashir El Deek was born in 1944 in Damietta, Egypt. He earned his bachelor’s degree in commerce from Cairo University in 1966, before he launched his career as a screenwriter and director. El Deek is best known as a screenwriter for cinema, and especially The New Cinema Wave in Egypt along with Mohamed Khan, Atef El Tayeb and others. He was also a member of Al Sohba company, which consisted of directors and screenwriters of the same wave. He wrote A Dinner Date (1981) by Mohamed Khan, then he worked with Atef Al Tayeb on a film that’s considered to be the masterpiece of this era, The Bus Driver (1982), followed by many other collaborations between them. Throughout his career, many of his scripts gained critical acclaim, and were box office hits. He wrote and directed The Knight and The Princess (2019), Egypt’s very first animated feature film, which will premiere in the 3rd edition of GFF.
