More About Film

Ashraf “Kabonga” is the founder of Egypt’s first wrestling entertainment team and the driving force behind a dream that most people considered impossible. For more than a decade, he has transformed a modest town on the outskirts of Ismailia into an unlikely stage for homemade wrestling spectacles, where children cheer, families gather, and ordinary life briefly gives way to fantasy. To many in Abu Sultan, Kabonga is more than a wrestler or entertainer. He is a local character whose relentless optimism and larger-than-life personality have made him a familiar face across generations. Beneath his theatrical persona, however, lies a devoted father, husband, and community figure whose greatest challenge has never been inside the ring, but in finding a way to keep his dream alive in the face of mounting economic hardship and changing realities. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced him to sell his wrestling ring, the dream he had spent years building appeared to come to an end. Yet for Kabonga, giving up was never an option. His determination to rebuild his team and return wrestling to his town is driven not only by a passion for the sport, but by a belief that it offers something increasingly rare: a place where people can gather, imagine, and believe in something bigger than themselves. With his unmistakable charisma, infectious humour, and unwavering resilience, Kabonga embodies the contradictions of not only his small town, but today’s Egypt—where ambition constantly collides with survival, and hope often persists against all odds. The Return of Captain Kabonga moves beyond the spectacle of wrestling to reveal the man behind the larger-than-life persona. Through an intimate portrait of Kabonga’s family, friendships, and unwavering determination, the film explores the resilience required to hold onto an impossible dream in a world where survival often comes before passion.
