About the film

Premiering in the Spotlight section of the Biennale, Venice, this post-Soviet drama follows a Georgian hazelnut farmer navigating daily absurdities and hardship. Praised for its rich black-and-white cinematography with fine grain and nuanced grading, the film evokes a timeless feel. It brilliantly captures protagonists stuck in old ways along the Black Sea, unaffected by the collapse of the USSR.

Director

Levan Koguashvili

Levan Koguashvili was born in Tbilisi. His studies were interrupted by civil war before he trained in Moscow and New York. His work bridges documentary and fiction. His debut feature, Street Days (2010), premiered at Rotterdam and marked a fresh turn for Georgian cinema. Blind Dates (2013), played at Toronto and the Berlinale, winning over twenty awards. His documentary Gogita’s New Life (2016) premiered at IDFA, and his tragicomedy Brighton 4th (2021), won three major awards at Tribeca, including Best Film, serving as Georgia’s official Oscar entry.

More About Film

Set in western Georgia after the Soviet collapse, Guria follows a hazelnut farmer navigating power cuts, poverty, and everyday struggles while searching for love. Director Levan Koguashvili draws from his own memories of a turbulent era to show how hardship meets warmth and resilience. As the director notes, “Guria is my attempt to capture that unique period, where friendship, love, music, and humour existed alongside hardship.” Shot in black and white with traditional folk singing performed without instrumental accompaniement, the honest acting builds an authentic atmosphere of hope during difficult times.
