MASTERCLASS BY JEAN-JACQUES ANNAUD THE ADVENTURE OF FILMMAKING MODERATED BY KEITH SHIRI Sunday, September 23, 10 AM, TU Berlin (Audimax)

Jean-Jacques Annaud, the world-renowned, award-winning director with an international career spanning more than five decades, will be sharing with us the experiences, adventures and challenges that lie in store for young filmmakers. During this conversation, he will touch upon cinematography techniques and film theory with examples of his own works.

Jean-Jacques Annaud is well-known for his passion for exploration of different cultures, different genres, or a combination of both. His Academy Award-winning feature directorial debut, Black and White in Color (1976), was shot in Ivory Coast, causing him to develop a strong attraction for the cultures of the world. For his later works that include Quest for Fire, The Bear, Wings of Courage, Seven Years in Tibet, Enemy at the Gates and Black Gold; he traveled from Kenya to Scotland, through Austria and Canada; from Argentina to Nepal, Cambodia, Spain, Qatar and Tunisia.

His eagerness to explore, however, is not limited to countries and cultures. He has also excelled at literary adaptations throughout his career; he based his 1986 film The Name of the Rose on Umberto Eco’s eponymous bestseller, and directed The Lover in 1992, an adaptation of Marguerite Duras’ autobiographical novel. He revived legends, ancient cultures and historical settings with his films His Majesty Minor, Black Gold and Wolf Totem. He recently completed his ten-part TV adaptation of Joël Dicker's bestseller The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair, starring Patrick Dempsey.
