Costa Brava and The Sea Ahead in The Sixth Day of El Gouna Film Festival

The sixth day of El Gouna Film Festival’s 5th edition incorporated a special assortment of events and screenings, such as the screening of the Lebanese film Costa Brava, Lebanon by Mounia Akl, which was nominated for the 2021 Venice International Film Festival’s Armani Beauty Audience Award and won the NETPAC Prize at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.

The Sea Ahead by the winner of the 2015 Short Film Palme d’Or for Waves 98 Ely Dagher was also screened as part of GFF’s Feature Narrative Competition. Additionally, the French film and winner of the 2021 Venice International Film Festival’s Golden Lion Happening by Audrey Diwan was screened as well as a part of GFF’s Official Selection out of Competition.

In terms of events, the 2nd edition of Sunbird Stories continued with Filmlab Palestine: Pitching Session and Awards, as part of GFF’s partnership with Filmlab Palestine. Sunbird Stories worked on the development of five narrative short films, shortlisted from a number of submitted projects, by emerging Arab filmmakers in the genre of children, teens, family and coming of age stories.

In addition to this, Egyptian director Omar El Zohairy was also awarded the Variety's MENA Talent of the Year Award for his film Feathers, which is a part of GFF's Feature Narrative Competition. The award ceremony took place at 5:00 p.m. at El Gouna Conference and Culture Center.

Moreover, GFF’s industry arm CineGouna Platform hosted a masterclass titled A Masterclass by Stefan Grambart on Immersive Storytelling. The masterclass took participants through the creative process of working in immersive storytelling. With examples from the interactive web, immersive installations, games, and virtual reality, Stefan Grambart used case studies from his Emmy award-winning career in digital media to explore how to adapt to nonlinear storytelling and embrace audience agency.

The activities of the seventh day of El Gouna Film Festival’s 5th edition, which will be held on October 21, 2021.

Tomorrow will be the seventh day of the 5th edition of GFF, which will comprise a number of activities and events, such as the closing ceremony of CineGouna Platform. In its 5th editionCineGouna Platform included 20 cinematic projects, of which 13 were projects in development and were films in post-production in addition to one guest film in post-production. It’s important to note that CGP’s awards make up to US $300,000.

CineGouna Platform’s closing ceremony will be held at El Gouna Conference and Culture Center at 5:00 p.m.

Moreover, tomorrow’s events include a masterclass titled A Conversation with Zbigniew Zamachowski. In this conversation, Zamachowski will talk about his experience working with Kieślowski on Three Colors: White. This discussion will be part of Kieślowski’s Retrospective Exhibition that’ll take place at GFF’s 5th edition. This masterclass will take place at TU Berlin’s Audimax hall at 10:30 a.m. with Egyptian actress Tharaa Goubail as its moderator.

Additionally, a panel discussion titled Depicting Ancient Egypt in Film will be held with the participation of prominent filmmakers and Egyptologists who will raise questions around how ancient Egypt is being depicted in cinema. From historical accuracy to racial appropriation and whitewashing in casting and everything in between. The panelists are production designer and art director Onsi Abou Seif, actress Sawsan Badr, MediaHub co-founder Mohamed Saadi, and Egyptologist Dr. Yasmin El Shazli. The panel discussion will take place at TU Berlin’s Audimax hall at 12:30 p.m. with makeup artist turned filmmaker Mahmoud Rashad and GFF Co-founder and COO Bushra Rozza as its moderators.

In terms of screenings, The French Dispatch by American Academy Award-nominated director Wes Anderson, which was a part of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival’s official competition and was nominated for Palme d’Or, will be screened as part of GFF’s Official Selection out of Competition. The film will be screened at 10:00 p.m. at Sea Cinema.
