رMohamed Khan, born in 1942, was an Egyptian filmmaker of Pakistani origin and a leading figure of the New Realism movement in Egyptian cinema. After travelling to England to study architecture, he turned to filmmaking and graduated from the Higher Institute of Cinema in 1963. He began his career writing about cinema before moving into directing. His experience of Egypt’s 1967 defeat and his extensive knowledge of world cinema shaped his distinctive style. His debut feature, Sunstroke (Darbt Shams, 1978), drew inspiration from Michelangelo Antonioni while reflecting Egypt’s political realities. Khan directed around 21 films, many of which remain deeply rooted in Egyptian popular culture and regional cinema.
