About the film

The people of a small town in the Brazilian sertão gather to mourn the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants notice some strange things: their town and community are disappearing from most maps… Set a few years into the future, Bacurau is a portrait of the Brazilian community as it struggles to defend itself from the dangers of uncontrolled modernization.  The film premiered at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, where it was the joint winner of the Jury Prize.

Kleber Mendonça Filho, Juliano Dornelles

Kleber Mendonça Filho was born in 1968 in Recife, Brazil, where he continues to reside. He made several documentaries and experimental shorts produced through his own company, CinemaScópio. In 2012, Filho released his debut feature, Neighboring Sounds. His second feature film Aquarius (2016) screened at the 69th Cannes Film Festival. His latest film Bacurau was the joint winner of the Jury Prize at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival. (68) Born in 1980 in Recife, Juliano Dornelles has been working as a production designer for several years. His partnership with Filho started on the set of the short film Eletrodoméstica (2005), and he also worked as a production designer on Neighboring Sounds (2012) and Aquarius (2016). He has written and directed a number of short films and video clips.
