About the film

Marked as an outsider without a family name, Boomah grows up in a world where power is enforced and survival requires adopting masculine codes. She suppresses vulnerability to navigate rigid hierarchies, shaping her rise through loss and adaptation. When a rare connection feels possible, something unresolved from her past surfaces, revealing the emotional absence beneath her strength and the lasting imprint of a life defined by what was never given.

Director

Zaid Abu Hamdan

Zaid Abu Hamdan is a Jordanian filmmaker known for character-driven stories exploring identity, power, and survival within rigid social structures. His short film Bahiya & Mahmoud was the first Arab short to be eligible for an Academy Award nomination. His debut feature, Daughters of Abdulrahman, (CGP 2019 Alumnus) premiered to critical acclaim and won multiple international audience awards. His work blends emotional realism with dark humour, centering on complex female characters. Alongside his narrative work, he has directed projects across television and global brands such as Vogue Arabia, MAC cosmetics and Sesame Street. Boomah  is his second feature.

More About Film

Through the unforced, watchful gaze of its young protagonist, Boomah invites us into an informal world on the edges of Amman. Shaped by an environment that offered little support, Boomah has adopted the rough codes of the streets to get by. As director Zaid Abu Hamdan notes, she is “born into a world where belonging is inherited, entering a life already marked as an outsider, a curse.” When a rare moment of connection makes closeness possible, something unresolved from her past begins to surface, revealing the emotional absence beneath her strength. Director Abu Hamdan approaches the material with a direct, grounded style, maintaining an observant distance from a side of the city rarely shown on screen. He focuses sharply on the social pressures and personal choices of people trying to get through the day. Explaining his vision, he shares, “I wasn’t interested in explaining her, or making her likable… I wanted the audience to feel her through what she does, what she hides, and what slips through anyway.” Bringing this uncompromising vision to  life is lead actress Rakeen Saad. In a challenging, physically demanding role, Saad, making her screen debut, avoids conventional presentation to embody the director’s complex creation with authenticity. Her powerful work anchors the film’s tone, validating Abu Hamdan’s casting choice and deservedly earning her the Best Actress award following its premiere in the Asian New Talent section at the Shanghai International Film Festival.Ultimately, Boomah  stands as a striking and timely addition to the remarkable surge of Jordanian cinema, adding a vital new voice to the work currently resonating across the international festival circuit. Raman Chawla
