More About Film

Fresh from winning the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, this masterclass in social realism arrives as one of the most anticipated and discussed features of the year. Mungiu’s English-language debut brilliantly exposes a devastating cultural collision, refusing to lecture the audience or offer easy moral categories. The plot follows a conservative Romanian-Norwegian couple, Mihai (Sebastian Stan) and Lisbet (Renate Reinsve), who relocate their family to a remote, idyllic Norwegian village. Their strictly traditional, devout lifestyle clashes immediately with the progressive, secular norms of the local community. When child protection authorities intervene after a misunderstanding, an ostensible family matter escalates into a chilling bureaucratic nightmare.
