About the film
Part of his informal trilogy of historical correctives, Sergei Loznitsa's latest documentary State Funeral, based on the archival footage shot in the USSR from March 5 to 9, 1953, chronicles the four days leading up to the funeral of Joseph Stalin. The visually stunning compilation of unique, unseen or long-forgotten footage proves to be crucially relevant for contemporary audiences, for what it tells of history and the masses. It depicts some of what was considered terrifying days, filled with extreme and somewhat polarizing emotions.
