About the film

The third in a series of films featuring François Truffaut's alter-ego, Antoine Doinel, Stolen Kisses begins with Antoine being discharged from the army on disciplinary grounds. While resuming his on-again, off-again relationship with Christine, he takes on a series of jobs, including a position assisting a private detective. Things begin to get complicated when he finds himself falling for Mme Tabard, his employer’s wife, as he has to decide about Christine and his future. Stolen Kisses was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 41st Academy Awards and the 26th Golden Globe Awards.

Director

François Truffaut

Francois Truffaut is an emblematic French film director born in Paris on the 6th of February, 1932. He began as a film critic and was one of the most famous members of the French “Nouvelle Vague”. His first film, Les Quatre Cents Coups (The Four Hundred Blows) was a success and a powerful manifest of this new film aesthetics. Getting away from pure academicism, he looked for sincerity in creation. He did not hesitate to shoot scenes directly inspired from his life and obsessions. Thanks to both original scripts (especially the Antoine Doinel series) and books adaptations (Jules and Jim, Two English Girls), he became quickly a successful and well-known director. He won more than thirty prestigious awards all along his career, including Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival (The Four Hundred Blows). He died on the 21st of October, 1984 but still has a great influence on French and international cinema.

More About Film

Antoine Doinel leaves military prison after his national service that we imagine has been a trying time for him. He goes back to civilian life and looks for a job. He is, in turn, a night watchman, a television repairman, a packer and also a ‘periscope’, in other words, a private detective that a specialist agency secretly places in a firm where he is to keep a discreet eye on the staff and the business. It proves to be too delicate a job for Antoine Doinel. Will he be happier in love? Like many boys his age, he is unable to choose between a young female violinist and a married woman who represents his conquering of the unattainable.
