Anup Singh, born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, graduated in literature and philosophy from Bombay University. He honed his skills at the Film and TV Institute of India, Pune, specializing in direction in 1986. His debut feature, The Name of a River, earned him the Aravindan Award for Best Debut Filmmaker in India (2001) and the Silver Dhow for Best Feature Film at the Zanzibar International Film Festival (2002). His second film, Qissa: The Tale of a Lonely Ghost, debuted at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, winning Best Asian Film by NETPAC, the Silver Gateway Award at the Mumbai FF, and the Best Actress Award at the Abu Dhabi FF. His latest work, The Song of Scorpions, premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, earning accolades like the Grand Jury Award at the Soundscreen Film Festival and Best Actress at the Bay Area South Asian Film Festival. Anup Singh serves as the Ambassador for the International Film Festival of South Asia, Toronto, Canada, and is a respected cinema educator, teaching in the UK, Canada, India, and Switzerland.
