Since the time Fouad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, the life of his entire family has changed.
It is the mid-90s, in a small town in the north of Morocco. Fouad is the only technician the Post Office has. A neurological disease changes his life and that of his family, and since his diagnosis, a new story begins for Fouad, his wife, and their children. The house will be filled with love, sorrow, and memories.
While Fouad is dying, the family members are rediscovering themselves. As time goes by, sores appear, but the desire to live is inextinguishable.
Life Suits Me Well is a love story. It is a portrait of the family of Fouad Sabiri, and I tell the tale in the way that I lived it; without having any knowledge or information on Alzheimer's disease.
Without making an autobiographical film, Fouad's illness is loosely based on the years of struggle that my father—and the entire family, including myself—went through.
In this film, I wish to pay tribute to my family, and especially to my father—the man who did not stop working to feed his children. The man who was open-minded. The man who saved the life of my mother and her son. The man who saw his life turn into a real nightmare.
Alzheimer's disease broke my father’s life and that of his wife and children. The disease "won the fight" when the man was only 59 years old, and for years, I have wanted to do something… so I decided to write this film.
We are pleased to present Al Hadi Ulad Mohand's first feature film, Life Suits Me Well. The collaboration with Al Hadi is an extension of the production of his short film, The Fishermen's Break (2007), selected at the Filmmakers of Tomorrow section of the 60th Locarno Film Festival.
This largely autobiographical story that could have been packed with clichés still remained within the circle of intimacy. However, Al Hadi manages to surprise us by creating unexpected situations that are filled with humor, such as a scene where the chickens are wearing diapers, to talk about the disappearance of the family's founder, the father, and about the rite of passage experienced by the various family members.
Life Suits Me Well is paving a different way for Moroccan cinema, through a human and sensitive chronicle of its characters, without aiming at the effectiveness of narrative or biases, which creates real suspense.
At Kasbah films, Karim Debbagh and Michael Dreher—both directors and executive producers—have a strong desire to support the development of a modern Moroccan cinema through proposals other than those that currently saturate the local market.
We hope that you will be as enchanted by this project as we were.
