As GFF prepares for its 4^th year, the festival continues to support its film alumni from previous editions by taking pride in their accomplishments at festivals around the world. The latest news comes from Moroccan director Maryam Touzani’s Adam, selected to open the 10th Malmö Arab Film Festival (MAFF).

MAFF is the biggest film festival dedicated to Arab cinema in the Scandinavian region, and one of the largest of its kind outside the Arab world. The El Gouna Bronze Star for Narrative Film​ winner at the 3^rd edition of GFF will grace the silver screen of the acclaimed festival at the opening, kicking off the 2020 edition planned to take place from 8 to 13 October in Malmö, Sweden.

Adam tells the story of Abla, a widow and mother to a 10-year-old girl, who struggles to make ends meet and give her child the best possible future. She starts a home-based business from her kitchen. Every day, she makes and sells homemade bread and all types of traditional Moroccan pastries. Closed-off from life, leading an existence devoid of happiness and taking refuge in her work, Abla has become old before her time. Unable to manifest love towards her child, she has replaced tenderness with pragmatism. When Samia, a young woman who is heavily pregnant knocks on her door, seeking shelter, Abla is unaware that this chance encounter will change her forever.

Starring Nisrin Erradi and Lubna Azabal, Adam is a complex film that challenges conventional assumptions about single mothers, and how societal norms crush dreams, marking these women as ‘tainted.’
