CineGouna SpringBoard is a project development and co-production lab that offers opportunities to find creative and financial support for Arab film directors and producers with projects in development or films in post-production. Applications of feature narrative and feature documentary projects in development, as well as films in post-production, are accepted for participation in the program from all parts of the Arab world. In its 4th edition, CineGouna Platform increased its prize money, offering a total of US $300,000 for the winning projects in development and films in post-production. The prizes were funded by El Gouna Film Festival along with its sponsors and partners.
Several CineGouna Platform alumni
have made their mark regionally and internationally by winning acclaim and
awards at prestigious international film festivals. Yomeddine (2018) by Abu
Bakr Shawky, alumni of the inaugural edition of CineGouna SpingBoard, was the
winner of the François Chalais Award at the 71st Cannes
Film Festival. Khartoum Offside (2019) by Marwa Zein and Talking
About Trees (2019) by Suhaib Gasmelbari were presented at the
69th Berlinale, while Certified
Mail (2019) by Hisham Saqr and 1982 (2019) by Oualid
Mouaness were selected for the 44th Toronto
International Film Festival. Hinde Boujemaa’s Noura's Dream (2019)
premiered at the Discovery section of the 44th Toronto
International Film Festival, and received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 14th Torino Film Festival, amongst
other recognitions. Kaouther Ben Hania’s The Man Who Sold His Skin (2020)
received the Edipo Re Inclusion Award at the 77th Venice
International Film Festival and was nominated for Best International Feature
Film award at the 93rd Academy
Awards ; and 200 Meters (2020) by Ameen Nayfeh won the
BNL People’s Choice Award at the 17th Venice
Days. While Souad (2020) by Ayten Amin was part of the
official line-up of the 73rd Cannes
Projects in development are those for which principal photography has not yet been started. The best project in development will receive a CineGouna Platform certificate and a cash prize of US $15,000. Additional awards and cash prizes are presented through partnerships with local and regional institutions. A total prize money of more than US $300,000 are awarded yearly during the CineGouna Platform Awards Ceremony.
Films in post-production are films for which the principal photography has been completed, and work on post-production is still in progress. The best film in post-production will receive a CineGouna Platform certificate and a cash prize of US $15,000. A tribute to the free thinkers who never shied away from challenges in pursuit of their dreams against all odds; the Khaled Bichara Award for Egyptian Independent Filmmakers aims to commemorate the legacy of the late Khaled Bichara, former CEO of Orascom Development Holding and its subsidiary Orascom Development Egypt, to encourage and recognize unheralded talent. The award offers emerging Egyptian filmmakers a platform and an opportunity to demonstrate their filmmaking abilities and craft and a cash grant of US $10,000.
