As testament to its exceptional artistic qualities and expressive impact, Amjad Abu Alala’s 2019 debut feature, You Will Die at Twenty, claims yet another worthy recognition along its successful international tour.

The film was crowned as Best Feature Film at the inaugural edition of the Amman International Film Festival – Awal Film (AIFF), which was held from August 23 to September 2, 2020 in Amman, Jordan.

The Sudanese director’s masterpiece tells the story of Muzamel, who is born cursed by a Dervish prophecy that states that he will die at 20. Upon his anticipated 20th birthday, Muzamel is faced with a choice between accepting impending death, and a bus to the world he yearns to experience.

Based on a short story from the collection Sleeping at the Foot of the Mountain by Sudanese writer Hammour Ziada, the film has been recognized for its emotional tale and picturesque cinematography, going on to win the Luigi De Laurentiis Award at the 76th Venice Film Festival; Best Screenplay at the 30th Carthage Film Festival; and the Hamburg Producers Award at the 26th Hamburg Film Festival. It also received several prestigious nominations around the world.

Last year, You Will Die at Twenty participated at the Feature Narrative Competition at the 3rd edition of El Gouna Film Festival, where it won El Gouna Golden Star for Feature Film.
