Mischievously self-assured Mára and somewhat eccentric Heduš set out into the frozen wastes in search of adventure – by car, naturally. After all, Mára’s turning fifteen soon.

Winter Flies is a road movie about the flies that occasionally buzz around even in winter, somewhat like its protagonists, who are on a mission to nowhere… before it ends at the police station. It’s a film about the indescribable bond of boyhood friendship and the irrepressible desire to experience something, even if you don't exactly know what.

In award-winning director Olmo Omerzu’s latest feature, two adolescents hit the road in an Audi they steal, to create their own story and celebrate their innocence. It isn’t explained why the kids decide to take off – and this spirit of kids doing things without the slightest fear of consequence can be felt throughout the film.

During their adventurous road trip, Mara and Heduš rescue a dog from being drowned, and fulfill their hormonal needs by picking up a hitchhiker, Brána, who is a little down and troubled after a misunderstanding with her boyfriend. Eventually, they get involved with the cops.

Winter Flies is a clever look at self-discovery, one that refuses to take sides or give clear messages. As Mara recounts his adventures with Heduš, somewhere between what we see and what we are told, we encounter reality and perhaps fiction too.
