About the Film

“Chapacoense" or "Chape” is the football team of the small southern Brazilian town of Chapecó. From playing on a dirt stadium, it grew to become a nationally recognized team that qualified to play the final game in its continent’s championship.

Tragically, the plane that was carrying the team to play its match in Colombia crashed, killing 77 people. Three players, one of whom lost his leg, survived the crash.

The disaster not only hit the families and friends of those who perished but also affected the town that had risen to international fame because of its football team. The aspirations that had soared came crashing down with the airplane and the entire town woke up to debris and scattered body parts.

The documentary by the Zimbalist brothers is the story of this tragic event and how the team and the city struggled to survive it. It asks many questions pertaining to the accident the reasons behind it; eventually going further to present a powerful account of how the team was rebuilt and how the people of Chapecó overcame their anguish and hardship. It presents the story of an earth-shattering loss, and that of the people who try to cope with it, with unique insights into how winners are made, and how winning does not always depend on the skills of the players.

Our Team is an inspirational cinematic work, and a documentary film that touches the heart.
