A thirteen-year-old child, who lost most of his family under the Khmer Rouge, embarks on a search for their graves. After The Missing Picture (Un Certain Regard winner and Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film) Rithy Panh continues his personal and spiritual exploration. While his film S21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine (François Chalais Prize winner at Cannes 2002) analyzed the mechanisms of the crime, Graves Without a Name searches for a path to peace.
Rithy Panh was born in 1964, in Cambodia. A survivor of the Khmer Rouge, he escaped from a labor camp in Pol Pot and took refuge in Thailand. He finally arrived in Paris in 1979, where he studied filmmaking at the IDHEC. In 1989, he returned to Thailand to make Site 2, a film about the hardships that his compatriots have to face. His much acclaimed and awarded work since then is a chronicle of the history of his country and the struggle of his people against an oppressive regime. The Missing Picture, a memoir of the director's childhood, provides the foundation for First They Killed My Father (2017, GFF) by Angelina Jolie, which was co-produced by the director himself.
